The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announces National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) documents open for public comment.

A notice was issued by NIST on behalf of the NFPA to anyone interested in submitting comments about existing fire codes and standards and the development of new codes and standards. This effort is part of an initial step in the revision process of proposed NFPA fire codes and standards.

Among the codes and standards listed that are pertinent to the specialty fabric industry are:

  • NFPA-70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace
  • NFPA-701 Standard Methods of Fire Test for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films.

“The purpose of this request is to increase public participation in the system used by NFPA to develop its codes and standards,” writes NIST.

The complete summary is here. For information about the technical committee involved in the proposed changes, or to view a copy of the NFPA document drafts, visit www.nfpa.org.
