Tent Raising - Rotary Club of Elgin sets up shelter at the Gail Borden Public Library to help Haitians
Last week Elgin Noon Rotarians and library staffers set up a 10-person tent in the middle of the library rotunda. Why?
To show visitors how they can help Haitian survivors. The Rotary Club is raising money to send Shelterboxes to Haiti. The Shelterbox contains a 10-person tent, bedding, utensils, cooking equipment, water purification assistance, tools, books, radios and more. Rotarian assistance is already in Haiti awaiting additional shipments of these much needed supplies.
Rotary President Mike Warren said, "One of the fundamental goals of Rotary is international assistance and our members wanted to put our efforts for Haitians into a project that will provide assistance as soon as it arrives. With so many Haitians homeless, we think providing shelter and fundamental necessities will make a huge impact for people who need help quickly."
"Erecting the Shelter tent in the library rotunda will enable us to provide thousands of community members with a real sense of what their donations will do for people in need, " added fellow Rotarian and Library Executive Director, Carole Medal.
Over $10,000 has already been raised for the project by Elgin Rotarians, including the Elgin Breakfast Club. The Elgin Kiwanis Club and other community members are also supporting this effort. Warren said that donations from $10 to thousands are coming in. School District U-46's Central Office and Plant operations staffs contributed $1,300 . The PTOs and students at Channing and Highland elementary schools are also helping to raise funds as well as the Gail Borden Public Library Staff Association.
The goal of the Northern Illinois Rotary District is to send 1,000 Shelterboxes to Haiti and they are matching up to $1,000 per club. Rotary District 6440 has already exceeded its original goal, but will continue this effort to send Shelterboxes to Haitians in need. More than 3,300 Shelterboxes are already on the ground and more are being deployed.
People can donate to the Rotary effort at the library, or by sending money to Rotary Club of Elgin, P.O. Box 604, Elgin, IL 60121. Information about donating online will be available soon.
