Finnish researchers expanding uses for cellulose

Published On: July 16, 2015

Wood is widely considered the “green gold” of Finland, and a research project to use this plentiful and renewable natural resource focuses on finding new applications for cellulose. These new uses may include serving as a raw material for textiles, home decoration and car interior materials.

In the first phase of the Design Driven Value Chains in the World of Cellulose (DWoC) project, the research collaboration (VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd., Aalto University, Tampere University of Technology and the University of Vaasa’s Department of Management) combined design and materials research to generate product concepts and technology innovations.

In the second phase, funding from Tekes, a Finnish agency funding business start-ups, will support textile applications for cellulose, such as 3-D printing, yarn made from pulp fiber suspension and cellulose building materials.
