ARA challenges health care reform

The American Rental Association (ARA) is asking its members to call their U.S. House of Representatives member to voice concerns about H.R. 3200 “America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009” introduced by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)

“ARA supports health insurance market reform. However, the reforms we have supported for the past decade that increase access and lower costs for businesses are not reflected in H.R. 3200. We believe this is a destructive bill for employers and citizens, with costly government mandates that an employer and U.S. taxpayers cannot afford,” said John McClelland, ARA’s vice president for government affairs.

The House bill must go through three committees of jurisdiction—Ways & Means, Energy & Commerce, and Education & Labor—before it can be considered on the House floor. In the Senate, the debate could be further complicated as two health reform versions are being drafted—one in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee (HELP) and the other in the Senate Finance Committee.

“Health care reform is moving very quickly through the U.S. House and Senate. We want ARA members to make sure their voices are heard in this debate,” said Christine Wehrman, ARA executive vice president and CEO.
