Nature, industry inspire green designs

A bar designed from a curving conveyor belt. A boutique created with white space and horizontal shelving. A lamp that is soft, inflatable and huggable. Cleanroom inc., New York, N.Y., defines clean design in architecture, display and furniture, using recycled materials and a jarring combination of inspirations from nature and industry.

A good example of the Cleanroom inc. vision is director David Winston’s spine couch prototype. The inspiration for the curving shape and reclining pieces was the human spine, with its movable segments. Winston designed and constructed the prototype, currently in use at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort Casino in Las Vegas. Another Winston design strategy includes filling backdrop areas with identical boxes filled with wheatgrass or other plant life.

The SuperNova inflatable light fixture produces a soft, ambient glow, fitted with a high-efficiency shockproof light and an electronic control box. Impact-resistant, inflatable and “huggable,” it produces virtually no heat while calming and energizing a room.
