Making awnings with solution-dyed acrylic binding and fabric

Published On: December 1, 2010

I’m making awnings and I need a recommendation for what sort of machine I should use to sew solution-dyed acrylic binding onto solution-dyed acrylic fabric. Any suggestions?

We contacted members of ATA’s Professional Awning Manufacturers Association (PAMA) and found that a special sewing machine isn’t used, but rather a binding attachment. If you’re using a modern piece of equipment and a standard size, then you should be able to obtain a suitable attachment through your usual distributor. If you have an older sewing machine or need a non-standard size, then you’ll need to go to an attachment specialist or through a sewing machine supplier. Typically, you can send the fabric and binding samples, along with information about the type of sewing machine you use, and they can make it to order. One awning company said that his sewing machines were at least 50 years old and that he used a folder that was hand crafted by his local sewing machine repair person. Many thanks go to the members of PAMA who assisted us with this question.
