University of Texas graduate student and artist Gabriel Dawe uses thread to create objects and environments that “make the viewers aware of those [invisible] structures so they can reflect on how they affect their [lives], both in positive and negative ways,” according to his website. In his most recent work, the Plexus series of installations, Dawe uses sewing thread to generate an architectural structure that provides symbolic shelter from space and air.

Previous works by Dawe confirm his attraction to fabrics, yarns and needlework as the media for his vision of invisible structures that both bind and constrain the viewer. His works include giant hand-sewn insects on cast-off clothing, GI Joe dolls and army boots tightly wrapped in colored threads, and rooms full of threads that leave only the impression of structure in forms of color and light. His work will be on exhibit at the Texas Biennial from April 9 through May 14, 2011.
