Synthetic landfill cover made out of geosynthetics

The company that owns and operates a landfill in Missouri installed a new synthetic closure consisting of three primary components: two layers of woven geotextiles with tufted UV-resistant polyethylene grass that is laid over a 50-millileter LLDPE structured drainage geomembrane and sand infill. The geomembrane layer serves as the containment liner atop the landfill’s intermediate soil cover. Traditional landfill closures are reliant on trucking soils, heavy civil construction and ongoing maintenance. The company wanted to reduce environmental and financial liabilities by using a cover system made out of geosynthetics, including a synthetic turf layer, Agru/Closure Turf™ by Agru America Inc., which replaced the more usual erosive, vegetative soil layer. This approach eliminated a soil cover component, provided excellent stability, removed several thousand truckloads of dirt off the road, eliminated the need for vegetation maintenance, while containing landfill emissions.
