All under one roof

Kansas City, Mo., needed a building to store 8,000 tons of salt and sand used for winter road maintenance. The city worked with the Midwest office of general contracting firm McTech Corp., also in Kansas City, to build the South Satellite Service Center. The design called for a tension fabric roof, and that’s where Legacy Building Solutions Inc., South Haven, Minn., came in; the company engineered, constructed and installed the structure.

The facility features a translucent fabric roof mounted on a 10-foot-high, cast-in-place concrete wall. Measuring 100 feet by 160 feet, the building provides a space that facilitates winter road maintenance. Trucks can drive through the large side doors and load and unload under the roof.

The building was recognized by the Design-Build Institute of America Mid-America Region at its awards celebration on Oct. 16. Legacy and McTech received a Project/Team Award, which recognized exemplary application of design-build project delivery, resulting in highly successful projects that achieve best value while meeting design and construction quality, cost and schedule goals.
