APDN granted U.S. patent for pimaTyping® authentication
Enables identification of ELS pima cultivars, distinguishing country of origin.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a “Methods for Genotyping Mature Cotton Fibers and Textiles” patent to Applied DNA Sciences Inc. (APDN) for its pimaTyping authentication of extra long staple (ELS) or pima cotton-based products.
Unlike APDN’s fiberTyping® patent that identifies the genetic differences between two cotton species, G. barbadense and G. hirsutum, this patent enables identification of minor genetic differences among various cultivars under the G. bardadense species, making it possible to distinguish U.S. pima cotton from other ELS cottons grown around the world.
The company is in the process of developing commercial testing kits and will eventually be able to provide on-site authentication services.
