Dancing in the street
Street banners are typically used as a marketing device, advertising an upcoming neighborhood event or the like. But when Sydney, Australia’s five-block Martin Place promenade was transformed into a sparkling, shimmering, disco-light display during the December 2014 holiday season, street banners stood in for the classic metal disco ball.
Twenty-three banners, transformed into a disco-art installation called Street Light Disco, lined the walkway in the heart of the city’s central business district. Warringah Plastics of Brookvale, Australia, fabricated the banners’ shimmering surfaces by attaching mosaic tiles constructed from a thin reflective material to the banner fabric.
Each measured 4.5 meters tall by 1.5 meters wide. Office Feuerman, a design firm based in Sydney and New York, designed them.
As pedestrians strolled under the banners, the mosaic materials shimmered in the reflective light, creating a mirror ball effect. No report as to whether any holiday shoppers stopped to boogey under the banners.
