Attempting to prop yourself up in a chair or bed with traditional pillows can be frustrating, especially for someone who is immobile due to injury or other physical limitations. Bina Baitel Studio, Paris, France, has the answer—Soufflet, a pillow that self-inflates.

Bina Baitel, a designer who works in a broad range of sectors including furniture, lighting and other consumer goods, is known for transforming unique concepts into serviceable objects and spaces. Soufflet is an answer to the problem of reduced mobility, whether it is caused by age, sickness, a handicap or temporary immobilization.

Created in collaboration with textile designer Luce Couillet, Soufflet was developed through VATex, a program that encourages companies to design and market innovative products that mix textile applications with technology to be used in home, professional and public environments.

Made of cotton, the accordion-style pillow inflates with an air pumping system. It works via remote control with just the touch of a switch, allowing the chest or legs to be raised.
