Self-described as classic American cool, Tommy Hilfiger’s designs fuse traditional sportswear with influences from pop culture, music and even technology. That was the inspiration for a limited edition Solar Powered Jacket that combined classic tartan from a centuries old British woolen mill with the answer to a very modern need—the ability to recharge mobile phones, tablets and other devices on the go.

Hilfiger partnered with Pvilion, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based solar design and fabrication firm, to create the jacket. Pvilion’s detachable solar panels simply snap on the back. The panels are connected to a removable battery pack in the front pocket via a cable that runs discreetly through the garment’s lining. The battery pack features a double USB port that allows the user to connect to mobile phones, tablets or e-reader devices.

Made with a flexible amorphous silicon technology developed by Pvilion, the solar panel is lightweight and water resistant. When exposed to full sunlight, the solar cells fully charge the battery pack which, in turn, can charge a standard 1500 mAh mobile device up to four times. The battery pack can also be charged via a laptop or outlet.

Available for women and men, the jacket features an exclusive wool tartan made by iconic British wool mill Abraham Moon.
