Hospital and health care facilities have discovered that home-like surroundings, soothing sounds and enlivening art play roles in helping a sick child, declining elder or traumatized accident victim feel cared for and safe. Nevertheless, health care institutions must prioritize infection control over feel-good factors. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. acute care hospitals reported an estimated 722,000 health care acquired infections (HAI) in 2011. Cleanliness trumps ambiance every time.

Biovation Acquisition Company, Montgomery, Minn., helps health care institutions promote both art and science. In search of a “green” surfacing solution for their indoor products, Biovation developed BioSurf®, a bio-based, eco-friendly film protected by a transparent topcoat. It can be printed with custom digital images, bonded to drywall, integrated into wall panels or fabricated into artwork alternatives to canvas. BioSurf stands out in health care settings because it is not damaged by heavy-duty cleansers or disinfectants and can hold up to steel wool, ammonia, bleach, hydrogen peroxide and acetone. BioSurf’s ecofriendly material and cleanability makes it a natural choice for health care settings, but it works great for other “high-touch” venues, such as schools and museums.
