The objective of this training is to identify how vertical expansions of landfills can raise a number of legitimate engineering concerns that must be evaluated with via proper assessment of both the original land ll design as well as the new proposal.
Proper design and specification of landfill primary and secondary leachate collection and removal systems to meet New York State’s newly revised landfill requirements.
The latest updates on methods for conducting electrical resistivity liner integrity testing and leak location. NYS’s regulations now require testing to be done on both the upper and lower liners as part of the landfills CQA program.
Participants will learn how to specify electrical resistivity liner integrity testing to meet the new regulatory requirements and to help minimize construction schedule disruptions.
Principal Instructor, Dr. George Koerner’s interest in geosynthetics spans his entire professional life from undergraduate work in the 1980’s to the present. George’s master thesis was on direct shear testing of geosynthetic interfaces and his doctoral dissertation was on land ll leachate clogging of soil and geosynthetic filters. Both are regularly cited to this day. Beginning as a research assistant, then research associate in the Geosynthetic Research Institute his task segued into Assistant Director, Associate Director, Director Designate and Director of the Geosynthetic Institute.
Instructor Abigail Gilson, Senior Engineer has over seventeen years of diverse civil engineering experience and is a registered Civil Engineer in multiple states including New York, where she resides. She spent the first part of her career as a containment facility design engineer and joined TRI in 2012 to focus solely on the implementation and innovation of electrical leak location technologies. She has over fourteen years and 160 million square feet of electrical leak location experience. Her contribution to the field of electrical leak location includes numerous published technical papers, educational seminars, presentations world-wide, and chairing the ASTM committee for the recent revisions and additions to the ASTM Standard Guide and Practices.
Regulatory Instructor, Robert Phaneuf, P.E., is the Assistant Director of New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation’s Division of Materials Management and has worked in the field of solid waste management in a regulatory oversight role for over 38 years. Bob’s primary duties have included: formulation of statewide solid and hazardous waste management policy and regulation including supervision of technical and administrative evaluations of applications to construct and operate solid and hazardous waste management facilities throughout New York State. Since 1988, Bob has been a key member of the Division’s rule-making team for the State’s solid waste management regulations.
